Club Water

Our club water, Upper Salden Lake is situated at the bottom of Cook's Lane in Mursley, Buckinghamshire (MK17 0RU). The lake is approximately 1.3 acres in size, with depths ranging from 2 ft to 6 ft.

The spring fed lake is set in a cleft in the hills and is surrounded by shrubs and trees making it an idyllic setting to while away the hours and to enjoy a natural fishery in a “Mr. Crabtree” setting. The lake has a soft silt bed with large beds of traditional white lily pads, interspersed with soft weed providing a natural food source and cover for the fish. Overhanging trees and shrubs provide additional cover and refuge for the fish.

Fishing is from the 21 permanent platforms (swims) with those located along the roadside having parking adjacent providing easy access and will suit anglers with restricted mobility. Selected areas have been cleared behind some platforms to allow those choosing to night fish to erect “bivvies” or similar shelters.

All full (adult) members are permitted to night fish without an additional permit. The only exception affecting night fishing is that all anglers must be off the water by midnight on the eve of any of the published match dates.

Although there is easy access to the lake and ample safe parking, it should be noted that it is located on a working farm and there may be associated farm traffic or stock movements.

Junior members must be accompanied by an adult member at all times.

Please note the lake is subject to a closed season commencing March 1st each year.  This is to allow the fishery team to carry out repairs and improvements. The season therefore runs from April 15th 2024 to February 28th 2025.

Fish Stocks

Upper Salden Lake is supported by the Environment Agency as part of their Crucian restoration project.  Commencing in 2022 we have already received approximately 1700 Crucians from 4 - 8".  We will receive further stocking in late 2024.

Prior to the Crucian stocking, the lake has been largely self-sustaining and most species spawn successfully, though there has been trickle stocking of several of the listed species.  The survey conducted in 2021 established the natural recruitement and retention of our resident Tench was excellent.   Approximately 700 Tench from the EA were stocked in 2023 as a bonus and to introduce an new "bloodline" to our long established fish.

The following main species are present and were confirmed in our most recent survey: tench, crucian, perch, roach, rudd, and pike. In addition, we also have some orfe (ide), gudgeon, and chub.

There is excellent water clarity and the tench are a popular target species, although with thick lily beds as refuge they can be a challenge to land. Fish over 4lbs are often caught and the tench range from juveniles to adults.  Best reported Tench in 2023 was over 5lb.

Pike are present and run into the mid-double figures in size. The club also runs two well-attended pike matches every year.
